JOB PURPOSE

The Laboratory Technician will provide quality laboratory baseline and follow-up testing as part of the HIV Care & Treatment Project. The role involves performing routine laboratory procedures, maintaining laboratory standards, and ensuring accurate reporting to support patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct routine laboratory tests, including HIV testing and other diagnostics.
  • Provide HIV counselling and testing to patients, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Collect samples through phlebotomy, ensuring patient comfort and adherence to protocols.
  • Manage laboratory data entry, ensuring accurate documentation and filing of results.
  • Prepare and submit regular progress reports.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment.
  • Participate in the procurement process for laboratory materials as needed.
  • Train and mentor students and junior staff on standard operating procedures and laboratory safety.
  • Ensure the laboratory is clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Safeguard laboratory equipment and reagents, reporting any damages or shortages promptly.
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure integrated patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in operational research initiatives to enhance service delivery.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES

Education and Experience

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology is desirable.
  • Minimum of one year of hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in HIV testing and counseling.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist and Technicians Board.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in laboratory techniques.
  • Computer literate with experience in laboratory data management systems.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to plan and implement tasks effectively.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate across departments
  • Ability to make sound decisions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations and maintain professionalism.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and sensitively.
  • Understanding and adherence to all AMREF Policies and Procedures, including HR, Finance,
  • Procurement, and Health and Safety protocols.
