JOB PURPOSE

To Increase access to and utilization of safe and appropriate oxygen system products in resource-limited settings including to enhance the delivery of life-saving oxygen, in consultation with key stakeholders in the oxygen space.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

S/he will work with the Program Officer and members of the Oxygen Therapy Program Team (Amref OPT) and key stakeholders in the oxygen space to provide technical input to the oxygen therapy project as follows:

  • The Biomedical Engineer Associate will be responsible for ensuring proper functioning, safety and sound condition of all medical equipment and that they are in optimum maintenance condition and available for use.
  • Attend and verify adequate installation requirements and compliance to contractors for the project.
  • Plan and carry out preventive maintenance, repairs to all equipment and items of plant assigned to him from time to time.
  • Keep records of all job cards, PPM schedules and tasks as performed.
  • Handle all biomedical equipment job requests.
  • Plan and carry out periodic checks and inspections of bio-medical equipment within the hospital to establish repairs and maintenance requirements.
  • Recommend materials and supplies for requisition within the workshop stores necessary for efficient delivery of services.
  • Ensure tidiness and safety of workstations and sites within the hospital.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department and provide reports as required.
  • Vendor management and tracking of progress reports from the vendors.
  • In liaison with procurement, giving technical advice on tender information and tenderer requirements.
  • Keeping project file, both in online drive and hospital files, and ensuring files have all project documents.
  • Any other duty as may be allocated by the supervisor from time to time.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
Education and Experience

  • Diploma in biomedical engineering or related.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant, progressively responsible, professional experience is required.
  • Basic knowledge of medical equipment, medical devices, and biomedical engineering is required.
  • Hands-on working experience in medical device development, procurement, evaluation, commercialization, or scaling environment, particularly oxygen delivery systems is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in producing detailed technical guidance for use of medical devices is considered a strong asset.
  • Member of an engineering professional society or a regulatory body preferable AMEK.
    Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
  • High level of analytical and reporting skills.
  • Understanding of technologies in areas of oxygen delivery systems.
  • Oxygen Piping Assessment/Audit of the facilities Report writing.
  • Oxygen Piping Design, installation and commissioning Report (should include consideration for appropriate pipes, valves, alarm panel, manifold and isolation values) etc.
  • Basic knowledge of project management.
  • Excellent communicator of verbal and written concepts to an international audience.
  • Able to quickly understand instructions, to proactively seek clarification when needed.
  • Able to work well in a team environment.
  • Able to work independently and problem solving oriented.
  • Able to work in multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated communication and relationship building skills.
  • Proven capacity to work with collaborative teams across different locations and with different technical skills.
